Susan Lee Owen of OKC passed away on May 2, 2025.
Susan was born in Fort Worth to GP and Jane Owen on May 10, 1958. She moved to Oklahoma to begin college in 1976 and, much to the chagrin of her Texas Longhorn parents and brother, remained a proud Oklahoman until her death. She graduated OBU in 1980 with a degree in education and received her nursing degree from the OU College of Nursing in 1992. Susan immediately began her nursing career with Integris Baptist where she remained until her retirement as Administrative House Supervisor in 2020.
For over a decade, Susan was Nursing Coordinator for the OKC Memorial Marathon. She recruited many of the original nurses that still continue to volunteer, and she eventually managed the finish line to identify runners in acute distress as they finished the race. Her expertise and leadership were instrumental in building, leading and developing the team of 30 physicians and 70 nurses that have become the medical team for the marathon.
Susan was an accomplished quilter and proud member and officer of the Oklahoma Modern Quilt Guild. Her travels, usually with cousins and friends, often involved quilting shows and conventions and maybe the occasional stopover at a craft beer taproom. Susan was also a season ticket holder for the OKC Thunder, about which, as the playoffs approached and progressed, she talked knowingly, proudly and incessantly. More than anything, she probably regrets leaving before the end of the playoffs.
Susan was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Steve and Donna Owen of Hot Springs Village, Arkansas, 1 uncle and 2 aunts, a whole bunch of rapidly aging cousins and many beloved friends from Intergris, the Quilt Guild and the Marathon.
As per her wishes, Susan will be buried in Texas next to her parents. There will be a graveside service and burial on May 17, 2025 at 1 PM in Mankin Cemetery, Trinidad, TX and a subsequent celebration of life, with adult beverages, in OKC.
A special note of thanks and appreciation to the wonderful and loving staff at Heaven House - Elmwood Home, who gave Susan such a graceful final chapter.
In lieu of flowers, you may honor Susan's life with a donation to a worthy mental health or Alzheimer's charity.
