The best ever husband, dad, and grandfather, Herbert Southern, 88, was called to his eternal home on October 1, 2025.
He was born on September 3, 1937 in Mena, AR, to Benjamin and Martha Southern.
Herbert was a teamster for Union Pacific Railroad. He retired from Union Pacific. While working for Union Pacific, he earned many awards and held a patton for a rail jail. He invented several items to help with safety at the railroad. He had a passion and love for trains.
He loved life and loved his family. The best time spent was time sitting around a campfire in which he would call "Council Fires" and just talk.
Herbert loved animals and animals loved him. He had a pet deer as a child and he was known as the male Snow White because animals would just come right up to him. He would have the biggest gardens ever and grew prize tomatoes. He also enjoyed fishing.
He enjoyed old country music songs. His favorite was of course "Wabash Cannonball."
He loved to play jokes, especially on his wife Helen Jo. Herbert is remembered as a kind, sweet, gentle man.
He is preceded in death by his parents Benjamin Harrison and Martha Alice Southern, siblings Vestile, Vick, Rachel, Henrietta, Jake, and grandson Donnie Hill.
He is survived by his wife Helen Jo Southern, daughters Sharon Stitham and husband Chris, Kimberly Patterson and husband Charles, sister Ravina, grandchildren Lori Hill, Teri Benson, Benjamin Southern, and McKenna Southern. His wonderful legacy continues to live on in his great-grandchildren JJ Armstrong, Chloe Yarbrough, Donovan Minshew, Emmerson Southern, Millie Southern, and Charlie Southern.
Celebration of Life will be scheduled at a later date.
